A soil test shows what nutrients are in your soil and what you may need to add.

Soil Testing Services

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County offers two types of soil testing:a pH test to determine the need for lime or sulfur, and complete nutrient analysis.

For pH samples, use the form found here: Click here for the soil test form if you are unable to print the form, please provide the same information as asked for on the form, printed clearly, on your own paper. Two cups of soil are needed. The fee for a pH test is $2.00 per sample.

For complete nutrient analysis samples, you may use the pH form as found above, but write “COMPLETE NUTRIENT ANALYSIS” at the top of the form. If you are unable to print the form, please provide the same information as asked for on the form, printed clearly, on your own paper. Two cups of soil are needed. The fee is $30.00 per sample.If you would like the lab to determine the organic matter level, add $6.00 to the fee of $30.00 for a total of $36.00.Checks may be made payable to “Cornell Cooperative Extension” and must accompany the sample. Your sample will be dried, packaged and mailed to the University of Massachusetts.

Both pH and complete nutrient analysis samples may be mailed to us at: Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County, 99 Troy Road, East Greenbush, NY 12061. You may also drop off samples by visiting us at the above address between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM weekdays.
